  Keynote Speakers

The forum will be held for 3 days in December 11-13, 2010. It will consist of two Group Sessions following the Plenary Session. Group I will focus mainly on urban economy, society, decision-making, and management; Group II will focus mainly on urban energy, resources, and environmental control.

Keynote Speakers:
1.David Parrish, NOAA-ESRL, USA (http://www.igac.noaa.gov/SSCbios/Parrish_David.php)

Dr. Parrish works at the Chemical Sciences Division of the Earth System Research Laboratory of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA-ESRL). His expertise is in atmospheric chemistry and his research has focused on both regional and hemisphere-wide air quality and climate change issues associated with the chemical composition of the atmosphere. This work has led him to coordinate two highly successful IGAC Tasks on Intercontinental Transport and Chemical Transformation: ITCT-2K2 and ITCT-Lagrangian-2K4. ISI Thompson Scientific lists Dr. Parrish as a "highly cited researcher" in the Geosciences.
Dr. Parrish’s research has focused upon the design, construction and operation of analytical instruments to measure trace constituents of the atmosphere with the particular goal of understanding the ozone budget.  He has participated in, planned, and led several field campaigns designed to characterize atmospheric pollution, which utilized large, complementary suites of instruments from ground stations and aircraft platforms.  Campaigns that focused on urban areas include the 2000 and 2006 Texas Air Quality Studies, the 2004 ICARTT study in the northeast US, and the 2010 CalNex study in California.  He is particularly interested in comparing the evolution of air quality issues as megacities develop, with the goal of understanding how air quality can be improved most effectively and efficiently in all cities.  Currently he is a chapter lead author for the IGAC (International Global Atmospheric Chemistry) assessment of the impacts of mega-cities on air quality and climate.

2.Mr Allen Kearns, Deputy Chief, CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems, and Theme Leader, Sustainable Cities and Coasts, Climate Adaptation Flagship, Australia (http://www.csiro.au/people/Allen.Kearns.html)

Mr Allen Kearns is an environmental scientist with international experience and practical expertise in the social, economic and ecological consequences of urban and industrial developments. He is particularly interested in the application of spatial, social and systems understanding to prioritise investments in climate adaptation and mitigation in the built environment. Mr Kearns has 20 years experience applying cross-disciplinary knowledge to complex but practical problems for clients in industry and government.

3.Willy Verstraete is the Head of the Department of Biochemical and Microbial Technology of the Ghent University, Belgium (http://www.labmet.ugent.be/en/?staff:head).

Dr. Verstraete is appointed member of the Technical Commission for Soil Protection of the Netherlands. He is a member of the Flemish Council for Scientific Affairs (VRWB). He is also member of the scientific council of the Belgian food industry (FEVIA). His lecture will focus on Environmental Biotechnology for a New Urban Planning and Management.

4.Dr. Grimm is Co-Director of the Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research Project (CAP LTER), an ecological study of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Arizona State University .
http://sols.asu.edu/people/faculty/ngrimm.php

Dr. Grimm's research concerns the structure and function of ecosystems in arid lands. Her current research focus is on the cycling and retention of the element nitrogen, considered in the context of patch dynamics and landscape heterogeneity.
